Dear 4A and 4B Families,
Wow! It has been a great year! This group of fourth graders was awesome and we had a blast learning and laughing together. I had tons of fun teaching these students and I will miss each and every one of them over the summer. Speaking of which, I hope that all of you have the most wonderful summer break ever! Take some time to relax, have lots of BBQ’s, go to the movies, and check out all the amazing sights and events in and around Calgary. I wish all my fourth graders the best of luck next year and beyond. I know they’ll enjoy their new teachers and I look forward to seeing the students in the building and keeping in touch. Please encourage your child to email me over the summer break and I will always respond. Thank you for all you have done to support your child’s successes in school this year. Many thanks also for the wonderful cards, works of art and gifts. I am so very appreciative and touched by your generosity. Best, Mrs. Ross [email protected]

The countdown to summer break is on! I cannot even believe we only have four full days left at NCS! I hope you enjoy them, Kodiaks! This week in math, students continued their learning in the 2D/3D shapes unit. They studied and explored acute, right and obtuse triangles, congruent figures, as well as solids and polygons. We will continue our last couple lessons in this unit on Monday/Tuesday. In science, students are beginning to wrap up their learning in the Plant Growth and Changes unit. They enjoyed watching and discussing many topics presented in the Eye Witness Plant video, and learned many facts about celebrations from around the world that are based on plants, weapons and defense mechanisms that plants have, as well as dandelions and their many uses. Students are currently working on their final task for this unit, which will be an entry in their creative journal responding to this prompt: Pretend you are a plant that is going to be destroyed to clear land for a shopping mall. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper explaining why you shouldn’t be destroyed. Remember, you need to convince the town residents of your value. Students have continued to work on their ABC Year End Project. They should have the entire project pretty much finished up for Tuesday, as we'll only have time to put a few finishing touches on things before the presentations on Wednesday. Good luck! Grade Four students participated in NCS's Annual Multicultural Festival on Friday as part of their studies in Humanities. Here are some photos from the 4A class: Upcoming Events and Important Due Dates –
June 26: ABC Year End Project due date & peer sharing in the morning / class party in the afternoon June 27: Last day of school Math – In math, students wrapped up the measurement portion of the math curriculum by identifying the area of various quadrilaterals using square metres. 4A and 4B's enjoyed planning and designing a "flower garden" to house roses, wildflowers, pansies, petunias and daisies on a 234m grid. 4A and 4B's also began their studies in the Shape and Space unit (2-D and 3-D Shapes) this week and are learning to identify and describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes. We will continue our studies in this unit next week! Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Science – In Science, students used class time this week to show and share their plant slideshows in formal presentations. The topics presented are below in the chart, as well as an outline of the task. Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of reminders and upcoming events at NCS!
Enjoy your weekend... only two more Monday to go until Summer Break! ~ Mrs. Ross Math – In math, students focused on estimating and measuring the areas of various polygons and quadrilaterials. They enjoyed designing a clown face on a grid, and then were asked to estimate and measure the clown's nose, mouth, eye and whole head in square units. Students were also able to find the area of their names in square units (see images below). All in all, it was a great week of exploring and learning about area through the visual arts! Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Science – In science, students worked in groups to research a given topic about plants. They then needed to collaborate by developing a slideshow to display the facts and information learned. Students began to practice their slideshow presentations in class today, and will have more time on Monday to plan and rehearse as a group before they share their findings with the rest of the class. I am looking forward to listening to the plant presentations next week. 4A and 4B students worked really well on this project. I was impressed with their technological skills, particularly how easily they could maneuver through the Google Docs program. Well done! Field trips - Many thanks in advance to the parent volunteers who are stepping up and helping out on Wednesday for the Heritage Park field trip. A reminder that permission forms are due back to the school on Monday. Cash, cheque, or debit/credit card paid in the main office are all options for payment, as well as online. If you require financial assistance, this is an option, as we do not want any of our students missing out on the trip. You will need to contact the office staff to make arrangements for financial support as soon as possible. If your child is not planning to attend the field trip on Wednesday, please let your child's homeroom teacher know. A copy of the field trip forms has been posted below, in case the originals were misplaced.
Have a great time this weekend, Kodiaks. Get outside and enjoy the sunshine!
~ Mrs. Ross Math – In math, students continued their learning in the measurement portion of the curriculum. Students worked to measure and record area in square units on grids, and also constructed different rectangles for given areas (i.e. cm2) in order to demonstrate that many different rectangles have the same area. Students wrote a short quiz on Thursday to demonstrate their understanding of this portion of the curriculum, and quizzes/grades will be returned next week. Students also spent a bit of time exploring symmetry concepts as they were asked to develop a "symmetree" using pattern blocks. All in all, it was a great week of exploring area with grids, pattern blocks and rulers (see photos below). Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Science – Our bean and sunflower plants are continuing to grow in the classroom and it has been exciting for the grade fours to observe each of the phases. Plants will be sent home with students to be replanted in our environment on Friday. Have fun continuing to observe the plants. I hope they bring you much joy as I'm sure they will for our community! 4A and 4B students used their class time this week to complete an online independent study on plants. Next week, students will work in assigned groups to continue and heighten their learning in the plants unit as each group will be given a different topic to research and explore. Students will collect information with their group members to create a Google Slideshow to present to the class. Students in 4A enjoyed participating in an art lesson with Ms. Cross on Friday. In the lesson, students listened to the story, "Van Gogh and the Sunflowers." They then created oil pastel images of their own as a response to the story, Van Gogh's sunflower artworks, as well as the concepts we have been studying in science around plants. Many thanks to Ms. Cross for teaching and inspiring the students in this amazing cross-curricular lesson. Here are the beautiful works of art 4A students completed: Year End Assessment (YEA) - All grade four students were introduced to the year end assessment project entitled “The ABC’s of Grade 4.” This is a culminating project that allows students to demonstrate their learning and understanding across the curriculum from throughout the year. This major assessment project will be due for all students on Wednesday, June 26th. Each day, students will be working on their YEA and will receive guidance from their core teachers. They will also use various art supplies, such as: stencils, magazines, newspaper, coloured paper, stickers, stamps, washi tape, and laptops to google/print images. Art material donations would be greatly appreciated for this project and students are permitted to bring in their own supplies to add to their scrapbooks if they wish. Students have been encouraged to stay on top of their work by following the calendar timeline of due dates. This calendar has been posted below and students also have their own copy in their rough notes. Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of the upcoming events at NCS, including this week's Triathlon, Cookie Dough pick-up and Taste of the Arts evening!

Math - In math, students began their studies in the measurement unit. They enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt in and around the school, which had them using a ruler to measure various items in both millimeters and centimeters. Students will continue their learning in this portion of the curriculum next week as we explore area by measuring in square units. 4A and 4B students are reminded to complete the "Measurement" task (both front/backsides) for homework this weekend. Science - In science, students completed an experiment involving celery stalks in class which demonstrated how plants get water from their roots all the way to their leaves. 4A and 4B's learned that the tiny tubes inside the stem (called xylem) draw the water up from the roots like a straw by a process called capillary action. Below are some photos from our experiment! Freeze Kids Comic Books dropped into Nose Creek School this week to offer a cartooning session with our grade fours (see photos below). If your child would like to learn more about the how to draw books or cartooning, here is the link: fkcb.ca Magazine/Cookie Dough Fundraising Food Trucks - NCS's Kodiaks sure enjoyed the yummy food offered by the Food Trucks in our parking lot this week (see photos below). From poutine to lemonade, cookie dough to cotton candy... it was tough for our students to choose what to purchase! Many thanks to Ms. Bennett for organizing this amazing fundraiser for our school. Bowling Field Trip - Grade Four students travelled to Bowling Depot in the NE of Calgary to enjoy a morning of lane time on Friday (see photos below). It was a wonderful outing and many students said it was "the best field trip ever!" Many thanks to Ms. Gill for volunteering her time to attend and also to the PE team for organizing the trip.
4A Parents,
Vivo has given me report cards to distribute for 4A's swim lessons. If you are interested in registering your child for future lessons, the specific levels have been indicated on their report card. Overall, the students swam very well and achieved high levels! Bravo! Our next and final field trip for the school year is coming up on Wednesday, June 12. We will be heading to Heritage Park in Calgary for the day to explore the various exhibits! This field trip is always an exciting one for our grade four students, and a wonderful way to wrap up and celebrate our year together. The 4A class requires four parent volunteers for the entire field trip/school day. Please let me know if you are interested and available. There is no cost for parents to attend. Thank you for your ongoing support this year, and please let me know if you have any questions. - K. Ross |
