There are no specific math/science tasks or homework assigned for students to complete over the Winter Break, however, students have been encouraged to review multiplication facts up to 7 x 7. Students' math and science duotangs should be in my classroom storage bins at school. If not, please return them on the first day of school in January!
If students are looking for academic challenges over the break, they are always encouraged to log into Prodigy to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Our upcoming unit in math will be number concepts- addition / subtraction / multiplication / division. Our current unit of study in science is Light and Shadows. I have updated and added various science links for students to explore on the right side bar for this unit. These websites will prove to be very beneficial for students, as we continue our studies together in the New Year! I would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Whether you are spending time with family, or taking a trip to warmer climates, have a well-deserved safe and relaxing Winter Break! 4A and 4B students... I'll see you back in class at NCS on Monday, January 7, 2019. Don't forget to bring back your agendas! - Mrs. Ross P.S. Parents and students... MANY thanks for all the cards, pictures, letters of appreciation, treats and gifts. I was truly touched by your thoughtfulness and generosity! You made me feel very special and valued.

4A and 4B students have been working hard in the Data Analysis unit for math! For this project, students brainstormed their own questions, conducted a survey with other grade four students and devised a bar graph to display the data they collected!
Our very friendly Kindness Elf, Peppermint, provided much fun, excitement and entertainment for the students this week. 4A's were keen to accept and complete his daily kindness challenges, and a few students have asked him to stay for the remainder of the year! Ha! I'm sure Peppermint will have to make his way back to the North Pole at some point, but until then... we'll continue to share and spread his acts of kindness! Math – In math, students completed five "Math in a Flash" activities in Book 4. These activities focused on division and multiplication, algebra facts, as well as doubles/halves. Students also worked through three data analysis tasks. These tasks had them drawing and comparing pictographs and bar graphs. Next week, students will finish their Math in a Flash book and will also work with an assigned partner to develop and record their own survey and bar graph for the data analysis unit. Estimation Station – Our Estimation Station was filled with a variety of small toys this week. Congratulations to K.T. in 4B whose estimate of 123 came closest to the actual number of 144. Well done, K.T! Science – In science, 4A and 4B students worked with an assigned partner to complete a Light Energy Scavenger Hunt in and around the school. They also worked online to complete an independent research task for the shadows portion of our "Light and Shadows" unit. This task has been completed by most students and was submitted for evaluation. Students used the information from the online research task to complete a short multiple choice quiz. I will grade and return the tasks/quizzes to students soon. Next week, students will experiment with shadows outside. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather! Math Blitz - Grade 4 students participated in a "Math Blitz" at Nose Creek School today! Each homeroom class completed three activities in 1.5 hours with various grade four teachers. Below are some photos of the activity Mr. Brewer and I facilitated. This activity had students working in small groups to solve four addition problems on an erasable placemat. A correct sum of all answers awarded students with "gems" for their festive tree craft. A big shout-out to Mr. Slusar, our amazing CTF Wood Shop teacher, for helping supervise this activity and also for making all of the wooden trees in his shop. AMAZING! The Grade 4 team is looking forward to our last week of school with the students. We have been busy planning lots of fun activities and events, and hope to make the final days of 2018 at NCS memorable! A reminder to check out December's "Upcoming Events at Nose Creek" on the homepage of this website for more information about next week.
Take care and enjoy your weekend. See you on Monday, Kodiaks! ~ Mrs. Ross Online Research Task - Part Two

This week, a Kindness Elf visited our classroom! 4A students decided to call the elf: "Peppermint". Each day, Peppermint challenged us to complete a kindness task. So far, the students have completed each of his tasks and are working hard to spread lots of kindness throughout NCS! Above are photos from each of the days. We are looking forward to seeing what Peppermint gets up to in our classroom, and also what his challenges will be for us next week! Math – Students finished up the algebra unit in math this week by completing a short assessment entitled: "All About Algebra." For this assessment, students worked independently and in their own space to complete a series of algebra questions involving vocabulary, addition/subtraction equations and word problems. I will evaluate and hand back these assessments to students next week. Students began their data analysis unit in math on Wednesday. They learned that the title of a graph tells you what the graph is about, and also that the labels on the axes tell you what data are shown in the graph. For pictographs, symbols are used to show data. The key shows what each symbol stands for. For bar graphs, bars are used to show data. Numbers on the axis show the scale. Here are some examples for you: 4A's and 4B's also completed a math task entitled: "The Lemonade Stand," which displayed the money Doreen earned for her lemonade stand in a pictograph format. Below is a copy of the task. We will continue our learning in the data analysis unit next week as students will complete various activities which will have them drawing and comparing pictographs and bar graphs! Prodigy – Students have been encouraged to log into Prodigy at home this weekend to complete the data analysis tasks I have set up and assigned. Good luck and have fun, Kodiaks! Estimation Station – 202 perler beads filled up a plastic cap in the Estimation Station jar this week. We had two students (one in 4A and one in 4B) who estimated 202 on the nose, which was AMAZING... but also were, unfortunately, duplicate estimates. Seeing as I didn't catch this error prior to the due date, I have awarded both 4A and 4B a point this week. Thank you to K.N. in 4A for agreeing to set up the jar with next week's challenge. Science – This week, students dug up the mini landfill we constructed seven weeks ago for our Waste and our World unit! Many students were surprised to observe the results, in that all plant-based items showed strong signs of decomposition, while all other items, including aluminum cans and glass, were dirty but did not change in their structure or appearance. Students recorded their observations and made conclusions for this experiment in their science duotangs. Students completed the "Spoony Science" experiment for our Light and Shadows unit. This experiment had them working in groups with a stainless steel spoon to explore the terms concave and convex. Students also connected their learning to concave and convex mirrors, which they use and come across in their daily lives. We will continue our studies in the Light and Shadows unit next week as we'll explore shadows with the use of our flashlights and the sun's energy! Mobile Escape Showcase – Many thanks to all the students and parents who came out to participate in our Mobile Escape Showcase on Thursday evening. The students really enjoyed collaborating with each other to design and build the various parts of the escape room. Here are a few photos from our time with the Mobile Escape team... Season of Giving – Many, many thanks for all your generous donations to NCS's "Season of Giving" challenge. 4A is in the lead with over 600 points!
Enjoy your long weekend and I'll see all my Kodiaks back in class on Monday - only 10 more days until Winter Break... but who's counting?! ~ Mrs. Ross This coming Thursday, December 6 from 3:30-5:30 PM at Nose Creek School, our grade four classes will be showcasing the Mobile Escape Room that they are currently building with the team from YYC’s Mobile Escape.
4A/4B/4C students are invited to attend the showcase with their families from 3:30-4:30 PM on Thursday, and 4D/4E/4F students will attend from 4:30-5:30 PM. Your students will not be permitted to stay at the school from 3:00-3:30 PM, so please ensure your child has a place to go after school and up until the showcase begins! With the strong support and funding from our incredible Parent’s Council, the Grade 4's have been busy planning and preparing a robot/rocket-themed Escape Room for you to explore with them! They are VERY excited to share their work… can you solve their puzzles and escape from the room before time expires? If you have any questions about the Mobile Escape Room Showcase, please do not hesitate to ask your child’s homeroom teacher. We hope to see you here at NCS on Thursday! |
