Math – This week, students continued to read, write and order numbers up to 10 000. They also learned how to use symbols to compare numbers ("<", ">" and "=") and worked to solve a couple word problems using their own strategies. Students enjoyed playing a math game involving numbered beans this week (see photo above), and they also wrote a short Place Value quiz on Tuesday. The quizzes have been graded and sent home for parental review. I would appreciate you adding your signature near your child's grade for this and all future quizzes/tests. Thank you!
Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. I am continually reviewing students' progress in the Prodigy program. Science – This week, 4A and 4B students really enjoyed going outside to observe plant and animal waste (see photo above). We walked to the community gardens, just across the road from the school, and students were able to see first-hand how nature recycles! Be sure to ask your student to identify the types of wastes they observed at the gardens. Students spent some time in class documenting and reflecting on their findings. Next week, we will continue to study and discuss living things in nature, including producers, consumers and decomposers. A big shout out and thank you to K.N. in 4A for bringing in and sharing some decaying matter from her home garden! 4A Homeroom – We began our first novel study in homeroom this week! We are very fortunate to have one of our amazing grade seven students in class each day to read us the novel "Run" by Eric Walters. 4A students have been awesome listeners for this novel study! On Wednesday, 4A and 4B students enjoyed spending some class time solving various math problems and overcoming battles on Prodigy! Some students also enjoyed wearing their hats in class for the "Caps for a Cure" fundraiser. As it stands, Nose Creek School has fundraised over $10 000 for "Run For the Cure 2018"! Way to go, Kodiaks! Meet the Teacher - Last night, Mr. Brewer and myself were able to meet many of our 4A and 4B families. The "Meet the Teacher Presentation" PowerPoint (see file posted below) was presented to parents in each of our three sessions. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Math - Students continued to develop their sense of numbers in class this week. They learned to compare and order numbers to 10 000, and also how to read and record 4-digit numbers on abacus boards. Students practiced writing numbers in standard and word form, and also explored digit values (i.e. the "7" in 8970 represents 7 tens or 70). Next week, 4A and 4B's will continue to compare and order numbers to 10 000, and will also write a short quiz on the concepts were have been studying in class. Over the weekend, I encourage all my 4A and 4B students to log in to Prodigy to brush up on their understanding of Place Value skills and concepts. I have created an assignment which supports the learning we have been doing in class... good luck! Science - This week, 4A and 4B students explored the City of Calgary's "What Goes Where" website on laptops (see link and video posted below). Students were able to search and identify the proper recycling or disposal option for various items. Did you know that stretchy plastic bags, including Ziplocks, are recyclable and should go into your blue bin? It is important for students to understand that not everything they consider to be "garbage" actually is, and that our world will be an even better place if everyone does their part by separating waste into the proper disposal systems (i.e. blue/green/black bins). Next week, students will begin to learn about nature's recyclers, including plant and animal waste. Students will also study producers, consumers and decomposers. Please note, we will be taking our learning outside next Wednesday in science... students are reminded to dress for the weather! Miscellaneous - Mr. Brewer and I wanted to clarify some questions we've had about the students' subject duotangs. For each of the following academic subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts, students have been given separate duotangs (smaller scale binders) to store their notes. The duotangs are kept inside our classrooms for students to use daily, but are allowed to go home anytime for students to show/share/study their work at home. Along with agendas and reading books, duotangs are required to be at school on a daily basis. If your student is taking their duotangs home, please ensure they return them on the following school day.

Monday Sept 17 - Dress Pink & Dance/Activity Afternoon Tuesday Sept 18 - Pink Hair Day (provided, optional and no cost to students) Wednesday Sept 19 - Caps for a Cure ($1) Thursday Sept 20 - Bake Sale (all items $1) In Math this week, students continued their learning about Numbers and Place Value. They had a Numbers Pronunciation Quiz today, and most students are now correctly saying numbers and their place values up to 10 000. Fantastic work, Kodiaks! 4A and 4B students also enjoyed watching a Math Antics video involving apples (see the YouTube video posted below), and completed several independent and group challenges involving number tiles. Students used the tiles represent and help describe whole numbers to 10 000, and also compared and ordered numbers to 10 000. We will continue our studies in this area of the curriculum next week. Prodigy – Students received a parent letter with their login information for the Prodigy website today. We will learn more about this amazing website next week in math class. Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts! In Science, we are learning about Waste and our World. The two big questions we discussed in class this week were: where does waste come from, and where does it go? Students listened to the story: "Where does the garbage go?" by Paul Showers. They learned about the way things used to be in terms of waste disposal systems, and also what we can do to create less waste and help our environment. 4A and 4B students enjoyed working in small groups to complete a scavenger hunt around the school yesterday. The hunt had them using their Five Senses to identify various items in the building - i.e. metal, glass, plastic, plant-based etc. Next week, students will reflect on the scavenger hunt items they identified and will learn how to properly classify and sort the items into their proper waste disposal systems. Meet the Teacher night is on Thursday, September 20 (6:30-8:00pm) at Nose Creek School. During this time, you can visit and tour the school to see where your student’s classes are and meet each of your student’s teachers. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about schedules, expectations, curriculum outcomes etc. Mr. Brewer and I will be running twenty-minute information sessions that pertain specifically to Grade 4. Please note: this is not a parent/teacher interview, so teachers will not go into detail about your student’s specific progress/performance to date. My 4A homeroom families received an email entitled: "Welcome to Nose Creek School" and my 4B families should have received an email entitled: "Hello from Mrs. Ross". Please let me know if you did not receive this email, or if you have any questions about the content. Students will learn to represent and describe whole numbers to 10 000 (pictorially and symbolically), as well as compare and order numbers to 10 000. In Science, our first unit is entitled: Waste and our World. In this unit, students will learn about how much waste we produce and identify ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. This Monday is a day 2a and students will start their full schedule at NCS.
