Math – This week, students enjoyed learning about "The History of Clocks" in math class, including the invention of clocks, different types & how clocks have changed and improved over time. Did you know that the first watches were made in the early 1500's? Many thanks to I.B. from the 7A class for sharing his science project and learning with us! Next week, students will explore elapsed time concepts during the homeroom periods. In addition to the clocks presentation, students explored decimal number concepts during class time this week. The video we watched in class, which introduced various concepts in the decimal unit, has been posted below. To date, students have learned to read, write, and recognize basic decimals to the tenths, hundredths & thousandths place, as well as a mix of all three. Students received a weekend homework task today which will have them "Adding and Subtracting numbers to Hundredths" (file posted below). This task is due for evaluation on Monday. Good luck! Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Currently, the students are working through problems involving addition/subtraction of decimal numbers. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – The end of April is here! After this week, there are only two more problems to come before I stop posting problems for this current school year. The last problem arrives on May 9. The school year has gone by so quickly! The link to the solution to last week’s problem is posted below. This week, we are renovating the flooring of an apartment. Happy Spring... and Happy Problem Solving too! Estimation Station – There were 418 puzzle pieces in the Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to Y.S. in 4A who came closest to that number with an estimate of 400. Great job! This past week's Estimation Station was the last one for the year as the 4A class won the most challenges. Science – We recognized NCS's GO GREEN WEEK by picking and cleaning up the garbage outside the school, and also reflected on other ways we can take care of the earth each and every day. Students completed an entry in their Creative Journals in honour of Earth Day (see photos below). In science, students also began their studies in the "Plant Growth and Changes" unit. Students enjoyed watching Bill Nye's "Plants" video, and were able to come up with numerous examples of plants in the world around us for their title pages. 4A and 4B's are looking forward to planting bean seeds in the coming classes, and will care, monitor and observe their plant growth until the end of the school year. A reminder to 4A and 4B students that the Simple Machines title page was due today. Many students did not put their duotangs in the science bin for me to grade, so please do so on Monday!
Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for an updated list of the upcoming events at NCS! Enjoy your weekend... see you on Monday, Kodiaks! ~ Mrs. Ross

Math – What a week! 4A and 4B students worked tirelessly through various long division problems, and also practiced & repeated many concepts. I was totally impressed with how quickly students picked up the steps and worked through 3 and 4-digit dividend numerical and word problems. Here are a few of the tasks students worked through in their sketchbooks. Way to go, Kodiaks! 4A and 4B students also enjoyed an estimation and division lesson involving the leftover marshmallows from last week's catapult project. Students had to estimate how many marshmallows they could fit into a muffin liner, and then tried to accomplish their estimated numbers by filling the liner. It was a tasty lesson... see photos below! Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – Last week's solution and this week's Problem of the Week are posted below. A night out can be expensive. This week, our problem looks at a night out at the movies. Enjoy! Estimation Station – There were 137 cloves in our Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to S.H. in 4A who estimated closest to that number. Well done! Science – In science, 4A and 4B students wrapped up their learning in the Simple Machines unit by taking a closer look at inclined planes. We played an informal game of "I Spy" outside and were able to identify over 50 different types of ramps/inclined planes in our community! Students also worked in small groups to design and build inclined planes to support and move our New Zealand friend, Buzzy Bee (see photos below). Finally, students rounded out the week by participating in three different science centres, which had them designing, building, experimenting, reflecting and playing! Next week, we will begin our studies in the "Plant Growth and Changes" unit, which is our final science unit for the school year! Swim Lessons - The Grade 4 team is pleased to announce that we will be providing students the opportunity to further develop their swimming skills. 4A students will swim during the week of May 6th to May 10th, 2019, which includes a 45-minute swimming lesson daily from Monday to Thursday, as well as an hour free swim on Friday. Below, please find attached the Parent Letter, Acknowledgement of Risk form and the Swimming Ability form. Students received hardcopies of these forms on Monday. I would appreciate you completing the forms and sending them back with your child by Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019.
It's Easter weekend... here's wishing you one filled with all the things that make you HOPPY!
Take care and see you on Tuesday, Kodiaks! ~ Mrs. Ross Math – We will continue our studies in the division area of the curriculum for one more week! According to our division checklist below, we only have a few more concepts to learn and work through. Well done, Kodiaks! Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – Last week's solution and this week's Problem of the Week are posted below. This week, have some fun with words and word values. Enjoy! Estimation Station – The black string in our Estimation Station jar measured 139 centimeters. Congratulations to J.G. in 4A who estimated that number right on the nose! Superb job!
Science – After spending time researching catapults last week, students were able to put their understanding to the test as they constructed their own unique marshmallow catapults! Students loved using their catapults to complete in our four "Catapult Olympics" events today (see photos posted below). I was extremely pleased with students' projects, particularly how they supported and cheered on their classmates during each of the events! Rubrics with grades for the Marshmallow Catapult Project will be sent home next week, and we will wrap up the Simple Machines unit next week. Have a wonderful weekend, Kodiaks. See you on Monday! ~ Mrs. Ross Welcome back from Spring Break! It was great seeing all my Kodiaks back in class this week. By the looks of things, students sure were busy over the break! Math – In math, students continued to be challenged in class with division lessons and activities. They enjoyed playing "Division Memory" (see photos below) in small groups, and practiced modeling and the "guess and test" methods for solving division problems involving remainders. Students were assigned a task entitled "Pose and Solve Problems" in class on Thursday (see file below). A reminder that this task is due for evaluation on Tuesday. Good luck, Kodiaks!
Prodigy – Students spent time on Friday logged into their Prodigy accounts. They are currently exploring various telling time concepts including: identifying time to the minute, elapsed time with clocks and elapsed time word problems.
