Math - This week, students continued to learn and brush up on their understanding of subtraction skills and concepts. Students practiced how to subtract 3- and 4-digit numbers, including across zero, with borrowing and regrouping. 4A and 4B's also learned how to solve subtraction problems using mental math and by estimating. Students worked to check their subtraction work by adding. 4A and 4B students were given a copy of the following notice today (including extra study problems). They are encouraged to study this weekend! Prodigy – Students worked online in Prodigy today to complete a quiz consisting of 15 addition/subtraction problems. If students were absent from school today, or did not complete the entire 15 problems, they are encouraged to log in to Prodigy over the weekend to do so! Problem of the Week – This week's Problem of the Week is posted below. Thank you, and a job well done to all my students who submitted answers for last week's Problem of the Week. Keep up the great work! In this week’s problem, a class bakes muffins to share with two groups in the school. Enjoy, but don’t get too hungry! Estimation Station – There were 139 school supplies in the Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to A.S. in 4A who came closest to that number with an estimate of 138. INCREDIBLE! Science – In science this week, students finished up their introductory lessons to the Simple Machines unit. Students can now successfully identify each of the six simple machines and provide examples for each machine in the world around us. We are beginning to take a closer look at each of the six simple machines now, beginning with the wheel and axle. Students enjoyed working with their table group members to complete a design task which introduced "rollers" in science this week. Below, I have posted the PowerPoint, which outlined the task to students, followed by photos from the design task.
After completing this design task, students were able to easily compare rollers to wheels. They noted many similarities and differences in their Visual Journals using a Venn Diagram. Next up, students will began building their balloon rocket cars! They have already made their wheels and axles (see photos posted below). Finally, grade four students enjoyed attending NCS's Annual Science Fair during class time today. They were able to see and explore numerous projects completed by grade 6 and 7 students. I have posted a few photos from the science fair below and would encourage my grade fours to reflect on their time at the fair by thinking about these questions: 1. What science fair project did you see today that was interesting? What made the project interesting? Was it a research or experiment-based project? 2. Were there any science fair projects that made connections to the ideas we have learned about in science this year? What did the presenter share and/or discuss? How does this connect to your learning? Enjoy your weekend, Kodiaks! See you bright and early on Monday morning... remember there is no school next Friday, February 1!

4A and 4B students, we will view and discuss this video in class on Thursday... then we'll begin the construction for our car project!
Looking for your drama script? Please click on the "LINK TO OPTIONS" button at the top of this website. From there, you'll need to scroll down to the script you received in class today. I will update this "LINK TO OPTIONS" area regularly, so stay tuned!
Today, 4A and 4B students received a copy of the "Wheels & Levers Glossary of Important Terms." Students will be studying and discussing these terms during the unit and are encouraged to study them on their own time as well. Here is a digital copy of the terms:
Math – In math, students have been reviewing and learning various concepts and skills in the subtraction unit. Students have been working both independently and collaboratively to explore numerical, visual and word-based problems. This week, 4A and 4B's enjoyed completing an online lesson with "Mr. Khan" in their sketchbooks. In this lesson, students learned how to process and represent one subtraction problem with borrowing/regrouping in three different ways. (The link to Mr. Khan's video has been posted below this blog entry.) As mentioned in an additional blog post (scroll down), students will need to stay on top of their learning by reviewing and practicing addition/subtraction concepts and skills, as well as completing all assigned tasks in preparation for the upcoming Addition/Subtraction Test! Students will continue their learning in the subtraction unit next week. Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts; various 4-digit addition and subtraction problems (with/without regrouping/borrowing) have been assigned for 4A and 4B students to complete. Problem of the Week – This term, I will be posting a weekly Problem of the Week (POW) focus question on my blog. This week’s POW has been posted as a link (see button below), and is a wonderful challenge for students to explore and tackle at home. 4A and 4B students are encouraged to work through the assigned problem each week and submit their answers to me throughout the upcoming term. Students should try to include numbers, words and illustrations in their work. This week’s problem involves saving money using coins related to the days in the month of January. Enjoy, and good luck! Estimation Station – We are looking forward to continuing our learning with a new Estimation Station on Monday. S.B. from 4A will be setting up the new challenge for us! Science – In Science, students began a new unit this week. This new unit is entitled: "Simple Machines." The six types of simple machines are: inclined planes, pulleys, wheels and axles, wedges, screws and levers. 4A and 4B's constructed a mini book in class on Monday, which described and illustrated each of the six simple machines. I hope you enjoyed reading and discussing this mini book with your child, as per their agenda message! Students also began their title page task for this new unit, and have been encouraged to include an artistic title and two examples for each of the six simple machines. This title page task is on-going as students are also encouraged to add new concepts discussed and explored in the unit; it will be collected and evaluated at the end of the unit. Finally, if you scroll down below this blog entry, you'll see a link to the simple machines video we viewed and discussed in class. This video helped students become "experts" for the facts that they were given and shared in class with their peers yesterday. All in all, it was a very busy and insightful week of learning in science. We will continue our studies in this unit next week. Students will need to bring in their 500 mL water bottle for Monday, if they haven't done so already! 4A Homeroom – Last week, 4A students were assigned the "15 Book Challenge." This challenge has already inspired many students to read and document the books they are reading (at school and at home). Students will need to meet with me during homeroom time to discuss their book prior to writing it down on their paper. Below is a photo of the 15 Book Challenge and also a file for you to download, if your student loses their paper or wants to work towards a 30 book Challenge (completing two papers).
Upcoming Events – Please refer to the “HOME PAGE” at the top of this website for an updated list of events and activities coming up at NCS!
Miscellaneous – Yearbooks are on sale for NCS students! Please refer to the image posted below for more information. (Our yearbooks are AMAZING and provide a great opportunity for students to reminisce and capture memories of this school year!) As always, please let me know if you have any questions/comments about this blog post. Thanks and enjoy your weekend! ~ Mrs. Ross Simple Machines are all around us! We use them in our everyday lives, without even realizing it. Click on the link posted below to learn more!
*4A and 4B students are reminded to add any new vocabulary, definitions, images, diagrams and concepts to their "Simple Machines" title page as we work through this unit. The title page task is due at the end of the unit. Good luck! www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2C0U9Ht_fw We started a new unit in science today: Simple Machines. Ask your student to share his/her “Simple Machines” mini book with you! Your student will need to bring in an empty, clear, disposable water bottle (500 mL /16.9 oz.) for next Monday, January 21 as we will be building a car in this unit! We also began a new unit in math: Subtraction. Your student will need to practice his/her basic facts daily and also review borrowing/regrouping concepts at home throughout this unit!
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful and fun Winter Break. I was very excited to see all of our Kodiaks back at school this week, and am looking forward to continuing our work together at NCS! Math – This week was a busy one for 4A and 4B students! Students extended their learning in the addition unit by studying and completing a series of addition problems, both independently and in partner/group settings. During our lessons, we focused on adding 1, 2, 3 and 4-digit numbers using the "counting on" and "vertical methods." Students reviewed and practiced how to regroup when adding numbers (including money amounts) and while solving word problems. We worked through oral, written and online (visual) addition tasks this week, and all students should have the assigned activities 1-6 completed for the addition unit in their duotangs. 4A's and 4B's are reminded to bring their math duotangs back to school on Tuesday with all tasks for any and all units this term completed. (A reminder that Monday is a non-instructional day, so there is no school for students!) Prodigy - Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to reinforce their mathematical skills and understanding of concepts. 4A's and 4B's are currently working through a series of addition challenges in Prodigy as we are nearing the end of this unit in class. Estimation Station – This week students took a break from Estimation Station to reflect on their estimates and skills, and also received their grades for Term One. I evaluated students in two ways for Estimation Station this term: one grade was for their participation in the weekly stations, and another grade was for their personal estimates (accuracy/spatial awareness). Evaluation rubrics are in students' math duotangs. We will look forward to continuing Estimation Station in Term Two! Science – Our studies in the Light and Shadows unit are quickly coming to an end! This has been a very engaging an insightful unit for students. From the discussions we've been having in class and in taking a look through students' notes in their duotangs, it is evident that much learning has taken place in our classroom! This week, students learned about the primary colours of light and the spectrum of colours - "ROY G. BIV". Students enjoyed watching "They Might Be Giants" music video entitled, "ROY. G. BIV" in class (scroll down to see the video posted earlier this week), and then worked independently to create a Visual Journal entry which represented their understanding of the spectrum of colours. Please see L.P's wonderful Visual Journal entry posted below! In partner groupings, 4A and 4B's also worked through a rainbows experiment using a prism. This experiment had students observing and comparing prism rainbows and natural rainbows (see 4B's experiment photos posted below). 4A and 4B students engaged in a focus lesson about the human eyes today. We discussed why eyes are important and ways we can and should keep them healthy. Here is a great website for students to read and review about the importance of protecting our eyes: A reminder to 4A and 4B students that "The Magic of Rainbows" reading and comprehension questions are due on Tuesday for Science. This task was assigned on Wednesday to all students. 4A and 4B students have been encouraged to type and print or email their answers for the "Personal Experience - Bonus Task." Good luck!
