Math - In math, students began their studies in the measurement unit. They enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt in and around the school, which had them using a ruler to measure various items in both millimeters and centimeters. Students will continue their learning in this portion of the curriculum next week as we explore area by measuring in square units. 4A and 4B students are reminded to complete the "Measurement" task (both front/backsides) for homework this weekend. Science - In science, students completed an experiment involving celery stalks in class which demonstrated how plants get water from their roots all the way to their leaves. 4A and 4B's learned that the tiny tubes inside the stem (called xylem) draw the water up from the roots like a straw by a process called capillary action. Below are some photos from our experiment! Freeze Kids Comic Books dropped into Nose Creek School this week to offer a cartooning session with our grade fours (see photos below). If your child would like to learn more about the how to draw books or cartooning, here is the link: fkcb.ca Magazine/Cookie Dough Fundraising Food Trucks - NCS's Kodiaks sure enjoyed the yummy food offered by the Food Trucks in our parking lot this week (see photos below). From poutine to lemonade, cookie dough to cotton candy... it was tough for our students to choose what to purchase! Many thanks to Ms. Bennett for organizing this amazing fundraiser for our school. Bowling Field Trip - Grade Four students travelled to Bowling Depot in the NE of Calgary to enjoy a morning of lane time on Friday (see photos below). It was a wonderful outing and many students said it was "the best field trip ever!" Many thanks to Ms. Gill for volunteering her time to attend and also to the PE team for organizing the trip.
4A Parents,
Vivo has given me report cards to distribute for 4A's swim lessons. If you are interested in registering your child for future lessons, the specific levels have been indicated on their report card. Overall, the students swam very well and achieved high levels! Bravo! Our next and final field trip for the school year is coming up on Wednesday, June 12. We will be heading to Heritage Park in Calgary for the day to explore the various exhibits! This field trip is always an exciting one for our grade four students, and a wonderful way to wrap up and celebrate our year together. The 4A class requires four parent volunteers for the entire field trip/school day. Please let me know if you are interested and available. There is no cost for parents to attend. Thank you for your ongoing support this year, and please let me know if you have any questions. - K. Ross Math – In math, students wrapped up their learning in the fractions unit by writing a quiz on Wednesday. Quizzes will be graded and sent home with students next week. Please take some time to review the quiz with your child. It was a tough unit and many students would benefit from continuing to review fractions concepts and skills at home in preparation for grade five. Our next unit in math is measurement. In the measurement unit, students will need to demonstrate an understanding of area of regular and irregular 2-D shapes by:
Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – Last week's solution is posted below. A reminder that there will be no more problems for the remainder of the school year. Congratulations and great work to all my Kodiaks who submitted and solved the various problems posted throughout the year! Science – 4A and 4B students are learning about the structure and growth of plants by raising bean and sunflower plants in our classroom. We have been spending time observing and discussing plant growth and the stages at which their plants have reached (see photos posted below). Students are learning to recognize and describe different forms of leaves, stems, roots and buds as they compare and contrast the growth of their two plants. 4A and 4B's are also learning about their plants' functions as they support the growth and reproduction. In the coming weeks, students will learn various ways of starting new plants and the plants’ requirements for growth. Through a dramatic activity this week, students explored the life cycle of a bean plant. They worked in groups to create and perform tableaus, movements and narratives for each of the six stages in the plant's life cycle. This dramatic task allowed students to explore and feel each of the stages with their bodies. Students have retained this information as a result, and I was very pleased with the high level of creativity and representations of this curricular information. This dramatic task was evaluated and grades have been entered into Powerschool. Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of the upcoming events at NCS!
I hope you enjoy your long weekend, Kodiaks. Make some memories. Get outside. Play. Have fun. I'll see you back in class on Tuesday... only six more weeks of school to go until Summer Break! ~ Mrs. Ross Click on the button below to learn all about green beans. Please take some jot notes in your sketch book. Your jot notes may include information about:
- the four varieties of green beans - how to plant green beans - common problems in green beans - the best green bean companions - harvesting and storing green beans - recipes for your green beans Math – In math, students continued their learning in the fractions unit. Both 4A and 4B students enjoyed their Wacky Cake baking lesson and were able to better understand parts of a whole concepts. A big thank you to our amazing parent volunteers who assisted these tasty lessons! Students will continue their learning in the fractions unit for a couple more lessons and will have a short quiz to end off the unit next week. Here are some fun games for you to practice your fraction skills, Kodiaks! www.franklinboe.org/domain/1681 Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. I have set up a fractions task online for students to work through. In this task, students will compare fractions (halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, tenths) by considering the size and the number of fractional parts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – This week's Problem of the Week is posted below. Robbie was practising his math and discovered some interesting sequences. What sequences will you notice? Enjoy! Science – Our green bean and sunflower plants are stretching towards the sky! We cannot believe how much they have grown in one short week, and it has been very interesting to observe & document their growth. Students learned about the six stages of a green bean plant (i.e. seed, cotyledon, seeding, small plant, growing plant, mature plant). The students created an artistic representation of this cycle in their Creative Journals.
Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of the upcoming events at NCS! I loved seeing all my grade four Kodiaks in the pool this week. The staff at Vivo complimented me on their positive attitudes and great progress... everyone had a splashing good time! A big thank you to Ms. Peterson who volunteered everyday. Enjoy the Spring weather with your family, Kodiaks... and, especially your moms on Sunday! ~ Mrs. Ross Math – This week, the students wrapped up their learning in the decimals unit and also began their studies in the fractions unit. Students explored fractions terminology (i.e. numerator/denominator) by reading and writing numbers, and also learned to relate decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. Students will continue their work in the fractions unit next week and are REALLY looking forward to baking Wacky Cake in the Foods Room as they explore fractions as parts of a whole and sets. A reminder that 4A students will bake on Tuesday from 10:30 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. and 4B students are scheduled for baking on Thursday from 8:30-10:00 A.M. Website link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – Last week's solution and this week's Problem of the Week are posted below. After this week, there is only one more problem to come. In this week’s problem, you are provided with the area of a square. This is enough information for you to be able to find all of the areas. Good luck in your search. Enjoy! Science – 4A and 4B students were excited and eager to plant bean and sunflower seeds for their learning in the Plant Growth and Changes unit. Students will monitor and care for their own bean and sunflower plants until they are mature and ready to be replanted outdoors... lots of interesting observations and learning ahead!
We will continue our learning in the plant unit until the end of the school year. Students have been encouraged to add detail/ideas to their title pages and lists of "Plants I Know" throughout the unit, and will also complete both a group and independent research project in the coming weeks. Miscellaneous – 4A will be heading to Vivo for swim lessons next week! I know the students are looking forward to spending time together at the pool and learning/practicing new skills in the pool. 4A students will leave NCS just before 1:00pm Monday-Thursday, and at 9:30am on Friday for the free swim. Students are asked to pack their swim attire and towel in a plastic bag and to leave all valuables at the school including phones/money/backpacks etc. In the past, grade fours have been tired and hungry on the way back to the pool. If you would like to send your child an extra snack to eat on the walk back to the school, please do so... a piece of fruit or a granola bar are some healthy choices! Field trip forms were sent home this week for the Bowling Field Trip on May 24. The cost is $10, which includes bussing, shoe rentals and lane time. We are looking forward to an amazing day at the Bowling Depot... a reminder that forms are due back on or before Thursday, May 9.
