Updates for Humanities, Math and Science for 4E
Hello 4E Families,
Our multicultural fair is tomorrow morning and the students are very excited! Some students have expressed that they would like to bring food items to the multicultural fair. We have been telling students that there only needs to be a small portion, do not feel you need to feed all the grade fours. It should also be something that is easy to give out. We also discussed that if the student can provide an ingredient list to display for any other students who may have allergies to review. Thanks and if you have any further questions please feel free to contact me! Ms. Lavallee

THERE WILL NO LONGER BE PIZZA SOLD ON FRIDAYS FOR THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS HAVE A SNACK NEXT FRIDAY.
Humanities Students have started working on their multicultural project that they will be presenting at our grade 4 multicultural fair on June 21st! For this project, students picked a country that they were interested in to research and become experts in. With the information they learned from their research, they are going to create a presentation for the fair to teach others about their country. The students are very excited and engaged in this assignment. Their projects are looking amazing! The awesome countries 4E is researching are:
Heritage Park This week, students attended Heritage Park for a field trip and had the opportunity to see and engage with Albertan history that we learned in class! Students wrote journal entries about their trip and expressed many interesting things they learned. Some examples are:
Year End Project Students have started working on their Year End Project. This is a cross curricular project where students are creating a scrapbook of words and topics that they learned about throughout the year of grade 4. They are really coming a long and you can see everyone’s own unique creativity expressed in their scrapbooks! Science We have been observing the growth of our bean plants! They are looking amazing. Many have large leaves and are quite tall. Students will be bringing them home sometime next week. We have also been discussing where we see plants in our everyday lives - how do we use plants every day? Students will be writing about this next week. I encourage you to have a discussion about this at home. Do we see plants in our food? In the objects we use? Etc. Math Students have been revisiting and practicing their math skills in multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals through math colouring puzzles! French Students have been learning about “La Famille” (the family) vocabulary in French!
Humanities This week in Humanities we spoke about nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. After this we learned about acrostic poems and created some awesome ones as a class! There are 5 steps we should take when creating an acrostic poem: 1. Decide what to write about. It can be something you like or dislike. 2. Write the word down vertically. 3. Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your word/topic. 4. Place your brainstormed words and phrases on the lines that begin with the same letter. 5.Fill in the rest of the lines to create your poem. Below is one of the poems we came up with as a class use the word "school." I have also included a link to a website with poetry for kids https://www.poetry4kids.com/lessons/how-to-write-an-acrostic-poem/ We ended off the week by taking a plant we have researched from any biome and creating an acrostic poem for that plant! There was a lot of "old man cactus" and "aloe vera." They look fantastic! Next week we will edit and decorate them! Science This week in Science the students learned about leaf arrangements and types of leaves. The arrangement of leaves on a stem is known as phyllotaxy; leaves can be classified as either alternate, spiral, opposite, or whorled. Simple Vs Compound: A simple leaf blade is undivided as shown on the left (though the margins may be toothed or even lobed). The blade of a compound leaf is divided into several leaflets as shown on the right. Students have also been working on how to properly conduct research. They have been researching different biomes such as rainforest, grassland, and desert, and the types of plants and their needs within each biome. We also made observations of how tall our bean plants are and graphed the data as a class. Math
This week we practiced creating fractions that are the same (i.e. 1/2 is the same as 2/4 and 6/12) and adding fractions through various classroom games. Students were also introduced to coordinate planes this week. Using a coordinate plane helps us to find precise points on a graph (or flat area, such as on a map). Every point on a coordinate plane is read the same way, first the x-axis, then the y-axis. Students graphed ordered pairs to create a shape on their graph (a star) and we played a friendly class game of battleship to practice and review! French We have started to learn and practice our "family" vocabulary (La Famille). Students who did not complete their French project in class today are asked to finish them at home and submit them tomorrow morning. The instructions are attached below.
Hello! Our bowling field trip is tomorrow!!!
Students should bring a snack or two for tomorrow. If students wish to purchase food or drinks at the concession they will need to bring cash. Thanks and look forward to bowling with you all tomorrow!!! - Ms. Lavallee Today we had a presentation from Freeze DNA Comics, where they taught us how to draw comic book characters.
Students can order books by Freeze DNA with the order envelope sent home. These orders are cash only and must be submitted tomorrow, Thursday May 23rd. Feel free to email me if you have any further questions! -Ms. Lavallee Hello 4F and 4E Families,
Tomorrow, our class is going to take a walk to observe plants that grow in our community. We will be going out in the morning, so please make sure that you are dressed for the weather! Sincerely, Ms. Patterson and Ms. Lavallee Humanities
This week in Humanities we spoke about how Alberta became a province and in what ways Alberta started to change after this - logging, mining, and "The Dust Bowl." We also worked on our paper bag projects. These are DUE TUESDAY MAY 21st. Science In science we have continued to learn about plants. We spoke about the different parts of a plant, pollination, pollinators, and erosion. Some of our beans we planted last week have also started to sprout and grow!! Math We have continued to work with fractions this week. We focused on fractions that have whole numbers in them such as 4/3 or 7/4. We then used our fraction knowledge to make rice krispie treats today! It was awesome! French Students continued to work on their seasons project. They will have one more class to work on this next week. The project is due for 4E at the end of class on Tuesday May 21st and for 4F on Wednesday May 22nd at the end of class. Remember there is no school tomorrow Friday May 17th and Monday May 20th. Have a great long weekend! |
