Updates for Humanities, Math and Science for 4E
Humanities This week in Humanities we spoke about nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. After this we learned about acrostic poems and created some awesome ones as a class! There are 5 steps we should take when creating an acrostic poem: 1. Decide what to write about. It can be something you like or dislike. 2. Write the word down vertically. 3. Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your word/topic. 4. Place your brainstormed words and phrases on the lines that begin with the same letter. 5.Fill in the rest of the lines to create your poem. Below is one of the poems we came up with as a class use the word "school." I have also included a link to a website with poetry for kids https://www.poetry4kids.com/lessons/how-to-write-an-acrostic-poem/ We ended off the week by taking a plant we have researched from any biome and creating an acrostic poem for that plant! There was a lot of "old man cactus" and "aloe vera." They look fantastic! Next week we will edit and decorate them! Science This week in Science the students learned about leaf arrangements and types of leaves. The arrangement of leaves on a stem is known as phyllotaxy; leaves can be classified as either alternate, spiral, opposite, or whorled. Simple Vs Compound: A simple leaf blade is undivided as shown on the left (though the margins may be toothed or even lobed). The blade of a compound leaf is divided into several leaflets as shown on the right. Students have also been working on how to properly conduct research. They have been researching different biomes such as rainforest, grassland, and desert, and the types of plants and their needs within each biome. We also made observations of how tall our bean plants are and graphed the data as a class. Math
This week we practiced creating fractions that are the same (i.e. 1/2 is the same as 2/4 and 6/12) and adding fractions through various classroom games. Students were also introduced to coordinate planes this week. Using a coordinate plane helps us to find precise points on a graph (or flat area, such as on a map). Every point on a coordinate plane is read the same way, first the x-axis, then the y-axis. Students graphed ordered pairs to create a shape on their graph (a star) and we played a friendly class game of battleship to practice and review! French We have started to learn and practice our "family" vocabulary (La Famille).

This week in Humanities we spoke about how Alberta became a province and in what ways Alberta started to change after this - logging, mining, and "The Dust Bowl." We also worked on our paper bag projects. These are DUE TUESDAY MAY 21st. Science In science we have continued to learn about plants. We spoke about the different parts of a plant, pollination, pollinators, and erosion. Some of our beans we planted last week have also started to sprout and grow!! Math We have continued to work with fractions this week. We focused on fractions that have whole numbers in them such as 4/3 or 7/4. We then used our fraction knowledge to make rice krispie treats today! It was awesome! French Students continued to work on their seasons project. They will have one more class to work on this next week. The project is due for 4E at the end of class on Tuesday May 21st and for 4F on Wednesday May 22nd at the end of class. Remember there is no school tomorrow Friday May 17th and Monday May 20th. Have a great long weekend! Humanities This week we started to speak about the events that lead to Alberta becoming a province! We are also quite close to finishing up our class novel and Paper Bag Projects for it!! We are very excited! Science In Science we started our plant unit and planted our bean seeds! We are just waiting for them to germinate. We had discussions around the needs of humans and the needs of plants. We also spoke about the similarities and differences between them. We also discussed what a plant's life cycle looks like. We are hoping that our seeds will start to sprout next week! Math In Math we revisited multiplication and did some practice around it to improve our multiplication skills! Students are encouraged to play prodigy this weekend "from school" to continue to practice their multiplication. French
Students started their "Seasons Project" where they have to create drawings of themselves in the four different season and write a paragraph identifying the season, weather, and clothing they are wearing. Most of our week was spent swimming! The walks were nice and the students seemed to really enjoy themselves. Many spoke about learning how to dive and learning how to hold their breath under water!
Humanities Students presented their Book Talk presentations this week! We were introduced to many amazing books! The presentations were also a lot of fun and the students did awesome! Math We started to learn how to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. We will continue with this next week! Science We started our new unit in Science on plants! Next week will start to grow our own bean seeds! Do not forget bowling forms are due next Thursday May 9th! |
