Hello Nose Creek families,
Parent council is starting a new fundraiser by selling coupon books called Action Packs. This is a great way to raise money for your children’s school. The coupon books are filled with coupons for FREE activities, items, and experiences such as a free hour at Flying Squirrel, free food and a free hour of VR. The order forms will be coming home with your child soon and purchasing a coupon book represents a great way to support Nose Creek School. When placing orders, please have cheques made out to FANS. Ms. Lavallee Humanities In Humanities this week we have started talking about "The Roots of Alberta." Students worked in groups to try and determine if the names of Albertan cities and towns originate from Francophone, British, or First Nations cultures. It was interesting for the kids to see and investigate! We then started to talk about the Fur Trade. Students created visual notes as we went through and examined this piece of Albertan history. Below are the powerpoint slides that we went over for this topic.
Math
Students learned how to calculate area and perimeter. We will continue this topic next week! Area = Length X Width Perimeter = Length + Length + Width + Width Science In Science, students were introduced to our next big project. Students are going to be working as a class to create an inclusive playground. This means that they are creating a playground that people of all ages and abilities can play on. Students have been interviewing people to help them gain an idea of how they can do this. Students have also been coming up with some amazing ideas for creating an inclusive playground where people of all abilities can play on! French In French, students were learning how to say the body parts in French. This will continue on next week. In math, students worked on solving and breaking down word problems. Students were given checklists with steps to take when solving a word problem: 1. Read question (read the whole question first, so that you know what information you need). 2. Underline information (underline only the important information). 3. Check question (re-read the question to make sure you only have the information you need). 4. Write equation (write an equation that shows how the information you have found fits together). 5. Solve (solve the equation for your answer). 6. Sentence (write a full sentence to respond to the question). Science Students started to review all of the simple machines we have covered. Next week we will talk more about what it means to exchange force and speed/direction to clarify any confusion. Humanities We concluded our First Nations/Storytelling unit! We will be starting a new unit next week! Do not forget that there is no school tomorrow Thursday February 14, Friday February 15, and Monday February 18! Humanities In humanities this week the students finished up their stories! They also finished their First Nations group research and got to share with the class what they had learned about each group! They did amazing on this. We moved on to talk about other ways we can learn about the past (besides stories). We talked about artifacts and archaeologists and how they use science to learn about the past. Students got to analyze different items from the past that Ms. Patterson and myself had at home! Students had a lot of fun with this and were able to identify the difficulties archaeologists can have in trying to learn about the past through analyzing artifacts. Today we created a First Nations Language book. Students had to research and find out how to greet someone in different First Nations languages. As a class we created this book and now have it in our classroom for any one who wishes to check it out! Science Students continued to learn about simple machines. They got to create their own pulleys out of recycled materials such as plastic bottles and cardboard. The students came up with some amazing creations for this that were all successful and creative. I will post some videos of the pulleys over the weekend as I am having trouble right now sending them to my email! We ended the week with talking about our final 2 simple machines - wedges and screws. I will attach the powerpoints below if you wish to review them!
Math In Math, the students started to work on multiplying numbers with multiple digits. They had to use their prior knowledge of multiplication they learned a couple weeks ago and apply it to this. We talked about two strategies you can use to solve these problems: - Expand, Multiply, and Combine -Stacking I will attach the powerpoint if you wish to review this!
French
There is a French test on Monday! Students need to know the days of the week and the months of the year! They should also review their numbers and how to say the date in French!
