Updates for Humanities, Math and Science for 4E
Humanities
This week we focused on working on our Book Talk presentations! They are all looking fantastic and I am so so excited to see the presentations next week. Students wrote their presentation dates in their agendas and should be aware of when they are presenting. Presentations are between April 29 and May 2nd. Science Students built their car and powered it with the assigned force. Yesterday we tested these forces against each other and collected our data as a class to see which force was most successful in making the car go across the classroom. Next week we will analyze our data. Math In Math we have continued working with decimals. Students started to practice multiplying numbers with decimals. I encourage students to play prodigy this weekend through the "in school" option to help them practice with decimals. French Students started to learn how to say the different types of clothing in French and will continue this next week Swimming is next week. Please see previous blog post for information on this.

4E will go swimming at Vivo - April 29 to May 3rd.
We will go to the pool Monday through Thurs.: 12:45 ~ 1:30 P.M. Friday - 9:45 ~ 10:45 Students will need the following: a swimsuit, a towel, clean change of underwear, water, plastic bag to put wet clothes into, & comb. Many students wear swim goggles as well, so these can be sent along. Because we will be walking to and from Vivo please make sure you are dressed for the weather. Students should also bring a snack to eat after swimming because they tend to be hungry afterwards! All valuables will be left at school! Humanities In Humanities this week we covered a few things! On Monday, students worked on their Paper Bag Project for our class novel "The Land of Yesterday." They got to decorate their paper bag and pick 3 items they would like to include in the bag that represents some aspect of the book. On Tuesday and Wednesday we focused treaties - what they are and different perspectives on them. Afterwards, students wrote a reflection on what they thought about treaties. Today students worked on their Book Talk presentations! These presentations will take place April 29th to May 2nd. Science Students started to design cars that will be powered by one of these forces: - moving air - push - pull - downhill motion - cranking mechanism As a class we will be testing these forces against each other using the scientific method to see which force will make the car go the furthest. We will start building our cars on Tuesday and test next week! Math This week, students learned how to add and subtract numbers with decimals. It is very important that the decimal place is aligned when stacking your numbers to add or subtract!!! Next week we will move on to multiplying numbers with decimals. French This week we learned hw to say the seasons in French! Spring - le printemps Summer - l'ete Fall- l'automne Winter - l'hiver Reminder: Swim forms are due Tuesday April 23rd.
There is no school tomorrow or Monday! Enjoy your weekend and the beautiful weather!!!! Math Decimals, Rounding, and Place ValueThis week we have started to learn about decimals and introduced the idea of rounding to the nearest tenth and hundredth. We have been using place value to help us understand the terminology that comes with decimals: thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths. Students spent a good chunk of the week practicing rounding decimals. For more information on decimals see the link below: https://www.ipracticemath.com/learn/decimal Science Forces ExperimentsStudents conducted their forces experiment and recorded their data into charts they made. We then focused on analyzing and interpreting our data using averages. We learned that analyzing data can help us make our information easier to understand. Students calculated the averages of their experiment and started to draw conclusions. On Friday, students started to write up their conclusions and we will continue this on Monday. Humanities This week we focused on ways the Canadian Government tried to convince and persuade people to move and settle into western Canada. Afterwards, students were put into groups and given a natural resource and a piece of land (i.e. coal, oil, forests, farmland, etc.). Students had to think about this natural resources their land had and create a poster and speech that would convince people to move to their land. Students had to think about: - travel -jobs -safety -education -health -homes - government French In French this week, we continued practicing and learning how to speak about the weather. We are starting to learn the below song about weather in French! Humanities In humanities this week we discussed what plot was and applied it to the picture book "What Do You Do With A Problem?" by Kobi Yamada. We then proceeded to start to apply it to our class read aloud novel "The Land of Yesterday." We also continued to learn about Alberta's roots. We started to discuss what settlers are and why the Canadian government at the time believed it was important to have people settle in the west of Canada. We discussed how the construction of the railway was used as one way to help encourage settlers to move to the west. We also discussed the many challenges that were faced when trying to construct the railway and how the Canadian government at the time approached these challenges. To end the week off, students were faced with the challenge of designing a railway and train that would go across Canada while trying to come up with their own solutions to the many challenges they were faced with! Some examples of solutions students came up with in regards to roaming buffalo on the prairies was to build a bridge that went over the train for the buffalo to travel across! Great ideas! Math In math we have continued to practice division and long division through various activities! We will be finishing up division next week! The division worksheet is due on Monday April 8th! Science In science we started to speak about what the Scientific Method is and why it is important! Students are now working on a science experiment where they are testing two types of forces against each other to see which allows a marble to roll a farther distance. Students love the scientific method song we showed in class. It is very catchy and helpful in trying to remember the different steps in the process! I will attach the video below! I will also attach the powerpoint used for the scientific method below!
French In French we have started to learn about different phrases and expressions to speak about the weather. Students created a cube that had different pictures of different types of weather and started to play a game with it. In the game, one student would ask "Quel temp fait-il?" (what is the weather like?) and the other student would role the cube. Whatever picture it landed on that student would have to reply with an expression of that weather in French! I have attached a video that goes through these phrases if you would like to review and practice!
