Updates for Humanities, Math and Science for 4E
Math This week we have continued to focus on and practice long division. We have discussed what the dividend, divisor, and quotient are and focused on using subtraction to find out what our remainders are. Below is a video I have shown in class that describes the process of using long division. Science
This week we experimented with balloons! The goal was to try and get your balloon to travel as far a distance across the classroom as you can! Students were learning about the benefit of making observations to help us know what we need to change in our design to make it better. Students were being introduced to control mechanisms and how they can help us makethe best use of forces we have available. Humanities On Monday, students presented their debates in small groups and we had a class discussion afterwards about whether or not their opinions changed after having the debate. Many students' opinions did change afterwards because their peers were so good at being persuasive - which was awesome to see! We also talked about being persuasive and how one can be persuasive! We are going to get more into this after spring break! This week we focused on the elements of a story - specifically setting and characters. We read a bit of our class read aloud "The Land of Yesterday" and worked on identifying the setting and characters in that particular book. I have attached the powerpoint slides used below if you would like to review them. Students were introduced to the book talk assignment and have their books picked for this project. Students have also created reading goals on what they would like to have read by the end of spring break. These are recorded in their agendas and will become a weekly task every Monday! Enjoy spring break! School is back in session on April 1st.

Students have been working on this project for the last 3 classes. It is due tomorrow Wednesday March 20th.
This project consists of: - A paragraph that is all about them and who they are. I have attached a picture of the requirements below. - A poster with a drawing of themselves and things they like/love. French Students are working on their All About Me projects! Science We finished up our playground reflections and will be starting a new unit "Building Devices & Vehicles that Move." Humanities In Humanities, we started to talk about Francophone and Protestant missionaries and where we can see their impact on Alberta today and in the past. I will attach the powerpoint below! We also spoke about what a debate is and why debates are good to have. We then debated about whether or not pineapple should be on pizza. We are now working on creating our own debates so we can have a class debate on a more controversial topic: What is your opinion on Francophone and Protestant missionaries from Alberta's past? Today we created mini Metis sashes! It was hard but the results were awesome!
Math
We have started working on long division. Many students are having a hard time grasping this so we have been practicing a lot. If students did not finish the practice questions today it is due Monday. The questions are below!

Students were confronted with 5 problems (one each day of the week) that they had to work in groups to solve. Each problem was related to challenges faced by voyageurs. One task was having to communicate with each other without speaking or writing. Another was having to map out a route in the school from scratch and have others try to follow that map. The last one was a simulation of what it would have been like to portage a canoe. For this one we also got to enjoy the nice weather outside! We have also started reading a book called "The Land of Yesterday" by K. A. Reynolds as a class. We are all enjoying this book very much and are curious to see where it goes! I have provided a photo of the cover of the book below! Students have also started to learn about what a Book Talk is and thinking about picking a book to read for this project. Book talks are very fun! They are a presentation of a book you have read where you are trying to convince your readers how awesome your book is and make them want to read that book! I am going to extend the date for having a book picked to sometime next week as our learning commons was closed this Thursday due to unforeseen circumstances. I will update this in the agenda. We also started to talk about the Metis - who they were and their contributions to the fur trade of Canada. I have attached the powerpoint presentation for this below if you wish to review it.
Science Students have been working together to create an inclusive playground that allows all children and adults of all abilities to play on it. Students have learned and discussed what the word inclusive means, observed their school playground, and interviewed people to gain perspective of what this playground should be like. We then came together and talked about what parts of the playground we would like to include. Students were divided into groups and assigned one part of the playground to build. Today we put our playground all together and then checked out the playgrounds the other classes came up with. They were super awesome! Below is a picture of 4E's playground! Math
In math we have started to learn briefly about division with remainders and improper fractions. We will get more into this next week! French Students have been working on creating sentences in French that are all about themselves. This is leading into a project that will be introduced next week. So far, students have created sentences about their eye and hair colour, things the love and like, and their personality traits. Fundraiser Coupons Coupon orders are due March 18th |
