Math – In math, students continued their learning in the measurement portion of the curriculum. Students worked to measure and record area in square units on grids, and also constructed different rectangles for given areas (i.e. cm2) in order to demonstrate that many different rectangles have the same area. Students wrote a short quiz on Thursday to demonstrate their understanding of this portion of the curriculum, and quizzes/grades will be returned next week. Students also spent a bit of time exploring symmetry concepts as they were asked to develop a "symmetree" using pattern blocks. All in all, it was a great week of exploring area with grids, pattern blocks and rulers (see photos below). Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Science – Our bean and sunflower plants are continuing to grow in the classroom and it has been exciting for the grade fours to observe each of the phases. Plants will be sent home with students to be replanted in our environment on Friday. Have fun continuing to observe the plants. I hope they bring you much joy as I'm sure they will for our community! 4A and 4B students used their class time this week to complete an online independent study on plants. Next week, students will work in assigned groups to continue and heighten their learning in the plants unit as each group will be given a different topic to research and explore. Students will collect information with their group members to create a Google Slideshow to present to the class. Students in 4A enjoyed participating in an art lesson with Ms. Cross on Friday. In the lesson, students listened to the story, "Van Gogh and the Sunflowers." They then created oil pastel images of their own as a response to the story, Van Gogh's sunflower artworks, as well as the concepts we have been studying in science around plants. Many thanks to Ms. Cross for teaching and inspiring the students in this amazing cross-curricular lesson. Here are the beautiful works of art 4A students completed: Year End Assessment (YEA) - All grade four students were introduced to the year end assessment project entitled “The ABC’s of Grade 4.” This is a culminating project that allows students to demonstrate their learning and understanding across the curriculum from throughout the year. This major assessment project will be due for all students on Wednesday, June 26th. Each day, students will be working on their YEA and will receive guidance from their core teachers. They will also use various art supplies, such as: stencils, magazines, newspaper, coloured paper, stickers, stamps, washi tape, and laptops to google/print images. Art material donations would be greatly appreciated for this project and students are permitted to bring in their own supplies to add to their scrapbooks if they wish. Students have been encouraged to stay on top of their work by following the calendar timeline of due dates. This calendar has been posted below and students also have their own copy in their rough notes. Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of the upcoming events at NCS, including this week's Triathlon, Cookie Dough pick-up and Taste of the Arts evening!
Enjoy your weekend and I'll see you on Monday, Kodiaks... only 4 Mondays to go until Summer Break! ~ Mrs. Ross
