Math – In math, students wrapped up their learning in the fractions unit by writing a quiz on Wednesday. Quizzes will be graded and sent home with students next week. Please take some time to review the quiz with your child. It was a tough unit and many students would benefit from continuing to review fractions concepts and skills at home in preparation for grade five. Our next unit in math is measurement. In the measurement unit, students will need to demonstrate an understanding of area of regular and irregular 2-D shapes by:
Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. Link: https://play.prodigygame.com Problem of the Week – Last week's solution is posted below. A reminder that there will be no more problems for the remainder of the school year. Congratulations and great work to all my Kodiaks who submitted and solved the various problems posted throughout the year! Science – 4A and 4B students are learning about the structure and growth of plants by raising bean and sunflower plants in our classroom. We have been spending time observing and discussing plant growth and the stages at which their plants have reached (see photos posted below). Students are learning to recognize and describe different forms of leaves, stems, roots and buds as they compare and contrast the growth of their two plants. 4A and 4B's are also learning about their plants' functions as they support the growth and reproduction. In the coming weeks, students will learn various ways of starting new plants and the plants’ requirements for growth. Through a dramatic activity this week, students explored the life cycle of a bean plant. They worked in groups to create and perform tableaus, movements and narratives for each of the six stages in the plant's life cycle. This dramatic task allowed students to explore and feel each of the stages with their bodies. Students have retained this information as a result, and I was very pleased with the high level of creativity and representations of this curricular information. This dramatic task was evaluated and grades have been entered into Powerschool. Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of the upcoming events at NCS!

In this week’s problem, you are provided with the area of a square. This is enough information for you to be able to find all of the areas. Good luck in your search. Enjoy! Science – 4A and 4B students were excited and eager to plant bean and sunflower seeds for their learning in the Plant Growth and Changes unit. Students will monitor and care for their own bean and sunflower plants until they are mature and ready to be replanted outdoors... lots of interesting observations and learning ahead!
We will continue our learning in the plant unit until the end of the school year. Students have been encouraged to add detail/ideas to their title pages and lists of "Plants I Know" throughout the unit, and will also complete both a group and independent research project in the coming weeks. Miscellaneous – 4A will be heading to Vivo for swim lessons next week! I know the students are looking forward to spending time together at the pool and learning/practicing new skills in the pool. 4A students will leave NCS just before 1:00pm Monday-Thursday, and at 9:30am on Friday for the free swim. Students are asked to pack their swim attire and towel in a plastic bag and to leave all valuables at the school including phones/money/backpacks etc. In the past, grade fours have been tired and hungry on the way back to the pool. If you would like to send your child an extra snack to eat on the walk back to the school, please do so... a piece of fruit or a granola bar are some healthy choices! Field trip forms were sent home this week for the Bowling Field Trip on May 24. The cost is $10, which includes bussing, shoe rentals and lane time. We are looking forward to an amazing day at the Bowling Depot... a reminder that forms are due back on or before Thursday, May 9. A digital copy of the bowling forms have been posted on the main page of this website for your convenience. Upcoming Events – Please refer to the main page of this website for a list of the upcoming events at NCS! Have a wonderful weekend... stay warm!
