Updates for 4F
HumanitiesThis week in Humanities we spoke about nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. After this we learned about acrostic poems and created some awesome ones as a class! There are 5 steps we should take when creating an acrostic poem: 1. Decide what to write about. It can be something you like or dislike. 2. Write the word down vertically. 3. Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your word/topic. 4. Place your brainstormed words and phrases on the lines that begin with the same letter. 5.Fill in the rest of the lines to create your poem (you can use a thesaurus dictionary to help you say what you mean, using the letters you need for your acrostic poem).
We ended off our week by taking a plant we have researched from any biome and creating an acrostic poem for that plant! There was a lot of "old man cactus" and "aloe vera." They look fantastic! Next week we will edit and decorate them! ScienceThis week in Science the students learned about leaf arrangements and types of leaves. The arrangement of leaves on a stem is known as phyllotaxy; leaves can be classified as either alternate, spiral, opposite, or whorled. Simple Vs Compound: A simple leaf blade is undivided as shown on the left (though the margins may be toothed or even lobed). The blade of a compound leaf is divided into several leaflets as shown on the right. Students have also been working on how to properly conduct research. They have been researching different biomes such as rainforest, grassland, and desert, and the types of plants and their needs within each biome. MathThis week we practiced creating fractions that are the same (i.e. 1/2 is the same as 2/4 and 6/12) and adding fractions through various classroom games. Students were also introduced to coordinate planes this week. Using a coordinate plane helps us to find precise points on a graph (or flat area, such as on a map). Every point on a coordinate plane is read the same way, first the x-axis, then the y-axis. Students graphed ordered pairs to create a shape on their graph (a star) and we played a friendly class game of battleship to practice and review! Be safe in the smoke and don't forget to read!

Work through the scientific method to learn more about the world around you. You can make your own observation, or start with any of the observations below.
(It may be easier for you to think of your question first, and then go back to think about what you observed that made you wonder that question.) What Ms. Patterson looking for: Science - I can use all the steps to help find an answer to my question and explain what I have found. Math – I can analyze my data (I can use addition and division to help me solve a problem). Today we had a presentation from Freeze DNA Comics, where they taught us how to draw comic book characters.
Students can order books by Freeze DNA with the order envelope sent home. These orders are cash only and must be submitted tomorrow, Thursday May 23rd. Feel free to email me if you have any further questions! -Ms. Patterson
This week, we learned about Biomes and did research. We also went on a walk in our community to help us compare the biome we live in to the biomes we researched. Plants - our students have planted more seeds. Some of us tried our bean seeds again, and other students helped us to plant grass, nemophila, and forget-me-not seeds. MathWe played a math game with dice to help us learn about fractions. We made fractions where the smaller number was on top. We then made fractions with the bigger number on top. We are trying to show what we know about when we have more than one whole. HumanitiesThis week, we read stories about people who came to Alberta from other countries. We made notes in our visual journals. We also finished our paper bag projects and will be presenting them next week!
Next Week/RemindersOnly one book is allowed to be checked out from the learning commons from now on. Please remember to bring back books - students can visit the library before and after school, during nutrition break, and during their lunch recess on Mondays and Wednesdays. Going Home Today-Freeze DNA Books -Swimming Report Cards -French - <<Tout Sur Moi>> Projects Enjoy the sunshine, and don't forget to read!
Sincerely, 4F and Ms. Patterson Hello 4F and 4E Families,
Tomorrow, our class is going to take a walk to observe plants that grow in our community. We will be going out in the morning, so please make sure that you are dressed for the weather! Sincerely, Ms. Patterson and Ms. Lavallee MATHIn math this week we worked on fractions and played bingo and the biggest fractions game. We had to figure out fractions to make rice krispies squares. HUMANATIESIn hum this week we were working on our paper bag projects due on Wednesday. Students were asked to take their bags home if they have not yet finished their projects. ScienceIn science we watered our plants and some people planted new beans and new flowers and we learned about flowers what animals pollination we watched a video on pollination and labled the parts of the flower. RemindersNo school Friday and Monday
Food trucks come on May 23 MathThis week, we took a closer look at our accomplishments in learning decimals. Students have been working on their decimal check-in booklets and we will be taking time to review math skills such as multiplication and fractions as we move forward. Students can use prodigy or other math websites to build their math skills, and I would also encourage our class to practice their multiplication math facts out loud, as this will help to strengthen their mental math skills. Science - Plants!
Swimming Field Trip ends - normal classroom resumesPlease return Taste of the Arts forms - see Ms. Patterson to get an extra copy if you need it!HumanitiesThis week, we explored what it means to be a community and how Alberta became a province. In the process, students generated ideas on what names would represent our classroom and the people who are part of this community. Our class voted to decide on one name that represented us and re-named our classroom community "Lil Buffalo", which acknowledges Alberta's history (decreased buffalo population in Alberta after European contact) and their own energetic personalities. Please encourage your students to continue using persuasive writing and speaking at home. Talking about opinions on various topics and addressing why they think or feel that way will help them to build stronger communication skills as we move forward this year. Have a great weekend - and don't forget to read!
