Updates for 4F
Season of Giving(Brought to You by the Nose Creek Leadership Team!)Each week leading up to winter break will have class challenges to help our students contribute to the larger community. Students will be able to give to their community by donating items to the food bank, volunteering, and getting involved with other charities brought together by our school’s Leadership Team as a fun game! Next week’s big event is a food drive, so the students of Nose Creek School have been asked to bring a non-perishable food item to support the Calgary Food Bank. I would like to remind students that the most valuable thing they can offer is their time, especially as we get closer and closer to the coldest days of the year. Have a great weekend, and don't forget to read!

4F students have been playing the djembe drums as part of their learning in the Music option with Mrs. Ross. They did an AMAZING job performing for the 4A class, Mr. Bauer and Ms. Patterson! Below are some photos taken prior to the performance... great job, Kodiaks!
Notes from 4F Students About Learning:
SOCIAL STUDIES We also read a book, called “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. It had a lot of details, like factories, trees, grass, living things, animals, and businesses. These things reminded us of Calgary. Our Mind Map of Alberta & "The Lorax"Sincerely, 4F Reminders and Updates from Teachers and Staff:

-Ms. Patterson This week, students explored natural resources and the impact that they have on the development of a city. They were tasked with determining resources that they would need to fulfill the needs of a growing city, and to pick two places on a map that could meet their needs. They addressed topics such as trade, renewability, occupations, and geographical features (such as rivers) that could impact their lifestyles. Students were able to dig deeper into their Natural Resources studies through research stations in the classroom. Students were able to learn about paleontology, paleontologists, fossils, legends, laws, and what to do if you do find a fossil. Students would like family members to be advised that if you find a fossil, you cannot move it from Alberta and should call a paleontologist at the Royal Tyrell museum right away. Dr. Annie Quinney, a professor at University of Calgary in the field of paleontology, says that valuable information is lost if a fossil is removed by someone other than a paleontologist. If you ever find a fossil, you can call the Royal Tyrell Museum paleontologists by calling: 310-0000, then 423-7707. Students have been working with ‘what makes’ charts to break down a large number into two smaller numbers. Students have also been checking their math with addition, manipulatives, and mental math. The classroom has also been open to discussions surrounding the question “what are three halves?” as an entry point to fractions. Students were able to demonstrate their understanding of scientific concepts related to transparency in their visual journals using a variety of materials. They also had the opportunity to develop a list of qualities, properties, and ideas about light, as well as questions surrounding reflection and absorption for us to research next week. Students watched clips from the Bill Nye Video “Light and Colour” to connect with these concepts. There will be a test in French class surrounding the numbers 1-39 on Nov. 27 Next week, Nose Creek School is hosting a BOOK FAIR. Because of this, there will be no book exchanges next week. Book fair hours are: Monday – Wednesday : 8:30am -4pm Thursday : 8:30am – 7pm Friday : 8:30am – 11:30 am It will be open during lunch and after school but not at Nutrition Break. The following is a message from the F.A.N.S. (Fundraising Association for Nose Creek School) regarding placing Cobs orders for a nutrition break snack. “Dear Parents, The next Healthy Hunger fundraiser is Nov. 28th Subway. The deadline to order is Friday Nov. 23. The new and exciting option is a Nutrition Break snack from Cobs!! The first theme is “Scones”. Go online and select the tasty scone of your choice. Your child will be able to pick up their scone from their homeroom teacher during nutrition break Dec. 12th. We hope you enjoy the new snack option. Stay tuned for other themes from our local Cobs Bakery. Thank you for participating in the F.A.N.S. (Fundraising Association for Nose Creek School) fundraising events! F.A.N.S.” On the healthy hungers website, you can register your child under our classroom, “Ms. Patterson”. My name at the very bottom of the list. If your child is registered in the other classroom, do not worry, we will find them their snack and make sure it gets to them! Parent teacher interviews are also happening next week, on Thursday (1:30pm-7:30 pm) and Friday (8:30am-11:55am). I would really like to meet you! Please book a time to meet with me by logging on to Powerschool, or by calling the main office at Nose Creek School.
Have a great weekend and don't forget to read! -Ms. Patterson Hello, and welcome to the 4F class blog! With the official start of our classroom on Thursday, we have been working together as a class to establish a kind and respectful classroom environment. We have telling each other about ourselves and exploring how we can contribute to the classroom community. On Thursday, we read stone soup and discussed what it means to be a community. We can all bring something small to enrich the collective, and students were able to create a poster detailing what each person is willing to bring to our table. Students also have a visible reminder of their growth as a community - our very own stone soup. So far, students have placed stones to represent themselves, and they will be able to add to our soup throughout the year as we grow as community. On Friday, Nose Creek School held a Remembrance Day Ceremony to remember and acknowledge the efforts and sacrifices made to protect peace in the world. Please take some time this weekend to consider the lasting impact we have on peace, and to recognize the people who have fought for the freedoms we have today.
Friday also provided students with time to get to know each other more closely, moving in table groups through stations set up around the room. Students also created “I will” statements as guidelines that will help us to create and maintain a positive learning environment throughout the remainder of the year. This weekend, I have asked students to take time for reading. I look forward to seeing them all on Monday. -Ms. Patterson |
