It was a busy last week before winter break! Our "Season of Giving" campaign ended this week with spectacular results. The final tally for our school was:
In humanities this week, students wrote their land quiz on Monday and results will appear shortly in PowerSchool. Students also read two chapters of our novel study Owls in the Family and worked on accompanying comprehension questions. Both classes are really getting into the story and we're having good discussions around the book. We watched an informative video entitled "The Secret Life of Owls" (I've included a short snippet of the video below) which highlighted the great-horned owl in its natural habitat. Students learned lots of new facts about these incredible creatures and it was nice to have a visual & reference to connect with our book. We will continue with our novel in the new year, along with starting to learn about Alberta's fossil heritage. Also this week, students worked on some holiday & winter themed creative writing during class time. Thank-you for all the wonderful cards, treats, and gifts I received this week. I truly appreciate it and wish everyone a safe & happy holiday season! —Ms. Jagger

In humanities this week, students typed up a good copy of their “Banff’s Future” written paragraph and then we shared a few each day. Students brought up many great reasons & facts why Banff should be kept as a national park. We also started a new novel study this week entitled Owls in the Family. This classic Canadian novel was written by Farley Mowat & tells the story of a family in Saskatchewan who take in two mischievous owls. We will be previewing vocabulary before each chapter & focusing on developing effective reading strategies through practice & modeling.
We did some grammar work this week on when to use apostrophes. Students learned that apostrophes are used in contractions, and when showing ownership. They practiced using both written & on-line resources. Students will be having a quiz on Monday, December 17th on the concepts we have been studying in class. A study guide was sent home on Tuesday and I have attached a copy below. Have a great weekend—one more week to winter break! —Ms. Jagger Try out the websites below to practice using & recognizing contractions:

Thank-you to parents & guests who were able to visit on Thursday as the students were proud to show off their hard work. In humanities this week, students learned about the five national parks located in Alberta and why it’s so important to have these parks in our province. Students learned what protected land means, and who protects & manages this land depending on what type of park it is. They viewed a PowerPoint containing information & visuals about each of the national parks in Alberta as they wrote jot notes in their writing journals. Some facts we discovered about each park are:
Thank-you for all the donations for our Season of Giving campaign—your generosity is greatly appreciated! We will continue collecting next week, and Wednesday we can earn extra class points if everyone dresses in red & green. Have a terrific weekend!
