Students have started learning Halloween and Autumn-related vocabulary. They started working on a Halloween related art and writing project. They will be creating a “maison hantée" (based on the picture puzzle books) on black paper and coloured with pencil crayons. On it they will draw pictures from their vocabulary list and then write a sentence about their drawings incorporating numbers as well. When finished, they will be sharing their finished product with their peers. Students started work on their writing using a supplied template to model their sentence on. They need seven different items with different numbers for each (like below).
Writing Example: Dans ma/mon maison hantée, je vois trois citrouilles, deux hiboux, cinq chats noirs, sept araignées, quatre déguisements, une sorcière et vingt bonbons! (In my haunted house, I see three pumpkins, two owls, five black cats, seven spiders, four costumes, a witch and twenty candies!) We’ll continue to finish up the writing and the artwork next week. —Mme Jagger

4A - quiz - Monday Nov. 5
4B - quiz - Tuesday Nov. 7 There will be a short quiz on numbers 1 ~ 21, days of the week in French, months, and introductory questions. Students are welcome to take home their French duo tangs to study for this test. All material within the duo tangs relating to these subjects is relevant to the test. Students should be concerned with knowing the English meanings of words/phrases. The test comprises matching questions and short answer questions. This week students spent one period creating their maison hantee, maison arbree hantee or l'autumn photograph using pencil crayons. The other period was spent writing their first French paragraph. Students are given sentence models that they fill in with a number from 1-20 and a Halloween or Fall vocabulary word. They will continue to work on this in French class next week. The kids will present their paragraphs and picture to the class on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31.
Classes 4A and 4B will perform the following French introductory conversation in front of their peers. This conversation covers a number of the French phrases we have been studying since September. Students have been frequently practicing these phrases in bi-weekly classes. Students will be evaluated on:
4A will begin conversations from Mon. Oct. 22. 4B will begin conversations from Thurs. Oct. 18. Here are the criteria given to students for them this conversation: Students have received a number of classes to work on this conversation and Mr. Brewer has practiced the questions with all students repeatedly in class.
We reviewed les nombres and l'halloween vocabulary in French this week. Students began working on their first French project. They will create a haunted house, haunted tree house or Fall picture using the vocabulary we have been learning. They will also write a paragraph describing what is in their picture using the French numbers and the vocab. Students will also present their picture and read their paragraphs to the class near the end of the month.
For the last few weeks we have been learning and practicing vocabulary associated with greetings, numbers to 31, and the date (days of the week and months of the year). Students will be writing a short quiz to demonstrate their understanding of this vocabulary. 4D will write their quiz next Tuesday, October 16th, and 4C will write their quiz on Wednesday, October 17th. Students are not expected to memorize spellings of French words, but should be able to recognize and translate vocabulary (example: dix-huit is 18).
—Mme Jagger Students learned the numbers from 0-20 in French and we practiced using two songs in class. In Grade 4, students will learn the numbers from 0-69. We will refer back to numbers often and use them in a variety of assignments. Our first French assignment will be using both the numbers from 1-20 as well as Halloween and/or Fall vocabulary. Links to the vocabulary we have been practicing are below. Students learned the months of the year this week and we practiced with the song below. Next week we'll start saying the date in French at the beginning of every class! —Mme Jagger |
